Art imbued with a quiet nostalgia; making space for reflection within the creative process
Bringing a work of art into your home or commissioning a special painting is a uniquely personal experience. Your choice might capture the memory of a landscape that you feel a deep connection to, or add a richer colour palette to a room that doesn’t yet feel like ‘you’. Artworks are often conversation starters that family and friends are drawn to - they tell a story that we can all relate to in some way - and this is certainly something I enjoy in my own home!
Based in Marple, Greater Manchester, on the edge of the Peak District, my work spans landscapes, portraiture and botanicals, and is quietly contemplative, capturing those small moments when you might find yourself caught between tasks and notifications. My artistic practice is documentary, deliberately focusing on ‘unremarkable’ subjects, and you are invited to pause and consider: a connection with a special landscape; honoring the memory of a beloved person; celebrating the achievements of those who may have been overlooked.
Working with acrylics, I apply paint in thin layers, gradually adding texture towards the concluding stages of a piece and with a playful use of colour to reflect the tendency of details to fade with time.
Compared to the softness of painted works, my ink and pencil drawings are studied exercises in capturing the fine details of an expression when producing a portrait, or the delicacy of botanical specimens, with a strong emphasis on structural composition.
